Okay, so I wasn't too diligent in keeping track of my finances last year. I did in terms of banking and how much I spent; but I didn't keep track where the money was going. Near the end of the year, I noticed it was mainly going towards food... and I have a belly to show for it. *glares at scale*

Financial Goal 2011:
i. eat out at most twice a week
ii. coffee 3 times max a week
iii. use cash, not credit when possible

I will continue to...
i. only buy things I need when they're on sale (clothing, makeup, etc)
ii. coupon stack! ...very "si-lai" but how could you beat $1 shampoo! =P
iii. research before purchase (text books, etc)

Entertainment '10: conclusion

So I attempted to track my "entertainment spending" in 2010. It was pretty good, but I stopped keeping track after August. It slipped my mind and I'm a tad disappointed.

My goal was to spend less than $350, but that didn't happen. From January to August 2010 alone, I spent about $690. Oops? I suppose going to a concert didn't help.

Am I going to do the same for 2011? I think I'm going to try. It's nice to reflect on what I've watched in any given year. Plus, I like seeing how I allocate my money.

Stuck at home working on two term papers. That's exactly how everyone wants to spend their weekend!

Anyway, I've been abnormally addicted to caffeine lately. Addicted to the point where it has no affect on me. Wait... so does that count as addicted? I'm not sure.

Rather than head out to take advantage of McDonald's last day of free coffee, or head to Starbucks/Waves/Blenz for some fancy caffeinated drink, I decided to stick with the instant stuff. They're not the same, but exponentially cheaper.

Pattie's "Poor Student" Mocha
2 spoonfuls of instant espresso
1.5 spoonfuls of instant chocolate milk powder*
a bit of boiled water
1.75 cups of milk

1. microwave milk to desired temperature
2. mix the espresso and chocolate milk powder together in your favourite holiday mug
3. add enough water to liquefy the powder mixture
4. add milk

*replace with melted chocolate if you can afford it

I am passionate about two things in life: finding a cure for Multiple Sclerosis and event planning.

Next week I will be setting up an interview for a contract position that ties the two together. Am I excited? Very!

I've been neglecting this blog for far too long. Come to think about it, I've been neglecting me. Too often have I been going back and forth from meeting to meeting. Sure, it builds my portfolio, but do the benefits weigh out the effort?

Yes and no.

I've learned a lot, but I've lost a lot. I miss hanging out with my family. I miss the Sunday morning dim sum time with my parents. I see my partners in crime, Helen and Carson, more than I see my parents--and I live with my parents! This experience has taught me a lot. It's helped me confirm what I'm passionate about. And most importantly, I've strengthened my people management skills.

I made a big boo boo in my last post.

I included my fourth year in the calculation. If I move out, it'll be before my fifth year starts, so I should only look at fifth year. So... co-op tuition is $665.40/semester. Tuition for 12 credits is $1926. (1926 * 1)+(665.40 * 2) = $3256.80.

So... from $7100 to $7774, it goes down to... $3256.80. A big less scary. =)

So it's finally going to happen. One more year until I move out.

...provided that my parents aren't going to refuse to pay my tuition if I do leave home.

What if they do? This semester costs $2197.54 excluding books. Assuming that most of my readings are from journals that are accessible online or from SFU library... $2400 per semester? $2400 x 3 = $7200. Then there's co-op: $800.85/semester. Two co-ops would cost me $1601.70, and three would be $2402.55. So that's $8801.7 or $9602.55.

But then again, I already pay for everything but the tuition itself.
Co-op tuition is $665.40/semester. Tuition for 12 credits is $1926. (1926 * 3)+(665.40 * 2) = $7108.80. or $7774.20 for three co-op terms.

So... if my parents refuse to pay for tuition if I move out, I'll need to save $7100 to $7774 more. Ack.

But anyway... I'm pretty excited for it. No more yearly trips though. And less going out for food. But I need to get out of this protective shell. I'm pretty independent, but my parents still baby me. I want to grow up =( I need more life skills!

When I "reply all" to the lunch crew meet up email, I just took his email out. Hopefully next time people will copy and past the emails from there and not send it to him anymore. Subtle? I hope so.

The Next 9 Months

I have two babies that will be born in 9 months... from different partners: YWiB SOUL and IMC.

I think if I can balance good grades at school, create a successful SOUL program, have a well acknowledged IMC, keep a steady social life, maintain a healthy relationship with the family, and have "me" time, then I can do anything in life. Confident? Maybe. Ambitious? A tad too much. But the big question is, can I actually do all that without any breakdowns?

Only time can tell. Check up on me in 9/10 months.

(By the way, if anyone can purchase Starbucks Double Shot on discount, please help me buy a case.)

Ramble & YWiB All Retreat

Stephen's comment made me chuckle... and I only say chuckle because giggle seems too silly for the content. Although I must say that chuckle isn't the right word either. *Remembers the short ramble by Miss Eisner about how words cannot be used interchangeably* I digress.

Are we both doomed to be insanely busy or is that how we enjoy our life right now? I think we're both ambitious in our own ways. I'm not clear on what I'm ambitious about, but it's something to do with benefiting my future. (That's good enough, right?) I must admit I need to take extensive breaks to recover from my life.

I just went on a retreat on the weekend. It wasn't much of a break though. It was an all YWiB retreat. (I'm in the SFU chapter, but there's a UBC chapter and a Greater YWiB as well.) The SFU-ers left Friday night and came back Sunday afternoon. Everyone spent Saturday working. We had meetings after meetings, with only meals as breaks. Intensive! Most of us did head out to Garfinkels after quiet time started. (We were staying at the UBC lodge.) As a huge group of girls, needless to say, we didn't have any trouble going in. It was fun and funny. We had each other so we were pretty awesome at getting rid of unwanted guys. Although at the end of the night, it was... different. Most of the stagettes left near the end of the night and all that was left, in terms of females, was our group of girls and a sprinkle of girls who were paired off with guys. Now imagine a club filled with males and a group of girls dancing with each other. It was like vultures checking out their prey. The dork in me immediately thought of Foucault's theory of the panopticon, and then the male gaze ideology. Yes, I'm a true Communications student.

Work hard and party hard. YWiB ladies are the best.

Now back to my notes... meeting with my Co VP tomorrow and then with the board on Sunday. Ahh.

Summer Semester Thus Far

After reading Stephen's new post, I figured I should write one too. I've been insanely busy this semester. I've confirmed that the busy lifestyle is what I love. I love the feeling of going from one place to another. The need to have a continuous to do list. It's so fulfilling to see a page of "to do's" all checked up and having it spill to another page. It's weird, but I'm not exactly "not weird".

It sure doesn't feel like summer though. The weather has been horrible. Toronto gave me a real summer to compare to, so Vancouver is disappointing me right now.

May highlights:

I'm not sure if I mentioned about my first official day of coop. Well, the wind blew out the power... twice. I ended up going home after 3 hours of work; two and a half of which we were out of power.

We spent our first anniversary in front of the television watching the very disappointing round two game four playoff game. Oh, and he made steak dinner. Yum.

Toronto! It was nice and relaxing. I really appreciated the luxury of taking Friday off from coop as well, so my trip was Friday to Monday rather than just Saturday to Monday. The concert was amazing. Our last meal before returning to Raincouver was outside in the patio. We enjoyed a nice meal with a cocktail and 27 degree weather.

Just on Friday, I went to a meeting with the organization that's paying for my coop. I found out when they were introducing me that they wanted me to do a short speech. Improvising in front of 23 established professionals is not exactly a easy thing.

The past week, I've had about 5 hours worth of meetings for YWiB (www.ywib.ca). Come to think about it, compared to the amount of work that has been done, 5 hours isn't a lot. I'm excited to see our programs and events launch by the end of the summer. The hard work will be worth it!

I finally tried the new ramen place: Hokkaido Ramen Santouka. It's a ramen chain that originated from Japan. I really enjoyed the soup. The cha-shu was delicious! It melted in my mouth. Om nom nom. I didn't enjoy the noodles too much, despite the apparent claim by Japanese people that Santouka cooks their noodles perfectly. I would prefer it if it was a tad softer. Just a tad. Oh, and locals claim that Santouka is the most authentic ramen shop in Vancouver. That may be true, but I've had ramen in Hokkaido and well... it's not the same.

Transit Fail

I am abnormally pissed at the transit system right now. I always account for late buses (to my best ability), but there's only so much I can do to ensure I'll get to work on time when the transit system is so unreliable.

I went to my bus stop 5 mins before my "safety" bus. I always try to get on one bus before the bus I should go on. This accounts for transfer time and a nice time buffer. Well anyway, that bus left early. The next bus was 10 minutes late. Now I'm going to miss my seabus. Worse part is, I'm going to miss the 228 bus, which comes once every half hour after 8.17 (I need to get on the 8.47 one to get to work on time).

Great. When I get on my safety bus, I always have time for coffee. Not going to happen today. Pattie's going to be a grumpy pants. Sigh.

Small?

Now, I know I lost a LOT of weight since two years ago... it's kind of nice, but I know there's still areas to work on. I'm not huge, but I could be more toned. I digress.

I went to Aritzia today (oh em gee, Pattie's turning into a regular girl?!?). There was a top I wanted to try and the sales associate asked me if I needed help for a size. I asked for a medium and a large to see which fits better (even though I know a large will be loose on me). She grabbed a small for me. Now, i was wearing a dress today and their mirrors are outside of the change room; I needed pants. She grabbed me a pair of 25" jeans. Yeah... thanks but no thanks. She wouldn't let me go a size up x_x*

Needless to say, I could not fit into the jeans. I could if I didn't eat all day and if my derriere was a tad smaller. No way on earth would I give up my toned butt to fit into a size 25.

The top wasn't that bad, and I did end up getting the small. It fitted just right and I was happy. Plus, a petite sales associate thought I'm around her size. Made my day. Now time to curl up in my bed with a book. (I went to the library for the first time in years!)

Coop Week 2

Eight official days down and I'm loving the position. I'm tired, and a tad overwhelmed, but it's a nice change. Usually, when I'm overwhelmed, there's no clear break between work and life. But because I'm by the hour, once I leave the office, I can put my "overwhelm-ness" on break. Love it! =)

Enjoyed a nice evening with A. "Panda" Lee. We went to Foundation for some om nom nom goodness and then enjoyed some Asian refreshments after. It was nice to catch up and just chit chat. I love how open we can be. No censorship here. It's rare to find a friend like that now... especially with so many years of history too. I'm lucky.

Mmkay, need to rest now. How is everyone else's summer going?

May is not coming soon enough. I am exciting for the next few months. I'm going to be busy with my first coop term planning Canada Day and the Summer Concert Series in North Vancouver. I had a meeting with a previous coop student in the same position today. I didn't realize how intense this coop term will be. I'm really nervous but excited at the same time. Other plans for the summer semester include intense Canucks playoff games, YWiB, work at CTS, Toronto Trip, Bard on the Beach, and walks along the seawall. It's going to be a great summer... I hope.

The past week has been pretty eventful. I'm exhausted and I can't wait to just wind down and relax. Although I don't see that happening any time soon. The MS Walk was an amazing experience. I had a lot of fun. I don't think I'm going to talk about it much here just because I have a lot to do tonight. However, I'm going to mention my favourite image from that day.

The morning of the MS Walk in Richmond was gloomy with overcast. However, by the afternoon, the sun started to shine. The volunteers started blowing bubbles as a little girl with long blond hair pranced around on the bright green lawn of London Heritage Farm. It was such a beautiful, innocent moment that all the hard work, stress, and time I invested in the Walk made it all worth it.

Money, money, money, must be funny, in the rich man's world

Mochachillo blended with yoghurt?

Yummy but expensive. It's cheaper than the alternatives such as Waves and Starbucks just because I get a free upsize (ex. pay for a small but get a medium) with SPC card, but $5 for a drink? Not exactly thrifty. I really need to watch my spending habits. I try not to spend much. I've started using cash only so I have to go through the inconvenience of going to the bank to get money. It helps... kind of.

Other budgeting ideas:
-write down what I spend
-limit outings per month
...any suggestions?

I may not stop my caffeinated drinks during crunch period (must stay up to write papers/study), but at least I'm starting to control my spending.

Oh, and for those who may think I'm in debt, I'm not. I just have a lot of plans in the future that require money. I enjoy my annual mini trips! I work too hard to not treat myself to a little get-away once in awhile.

Tonight

Tonight will define what I do from May 2010 to April 2011.

I am excited, nervous, and confused. Today I had the speech to run for SMA's Corporate Relations Director position with Bradley. He had a conflict of schedule so it was a one (wo)man show. The speech went well, but the Q&A was a tad nerve-wrecking. I'm decent in thinking on the spot... but to throw a 30 second pitch is something more challenging for me. I wish Brad was there. 'sigh'

Election results were supposed to be up by 11pm. They're not up yet.

I guess it's fitting that I update in this post since I did only find out a little less than 6 hours ago what the result is. Prior to the results, Bradley and I agreed that either way, it would be good news for us. (More on that later.) But no, we did not win this election. However, Bradley was contacted immediately by the opponent and asked to be his co. My thoughts on the election results? greed > improvement. Sounds harsh, but I'll explain later... time to go spend my day with people that didn't elect me... yay =)

This is Now

I planned to move out with a friend next year. Honestly, I would still love to, but I don't think she's interested in that anymore. We change our priorities and it's okay. Now I have more financial freedom to travel.

I really don't have any reason to move out. I have a roof over my head. I have my own room and and washroom space. My parents are always there for me, and so forth. But I do want to experience living by myself. I have an obsession with picking up responsibilities. I enjoy proving to myself that I can be independent. It makes me feel safe that I know I can take care of myself.

I enjoy escaping. Although traveling to different places is great, I simply just like taking a break from my responsibilities once in awhile. I think what I'll love to do in the future is a position where I can work hard for a period and then take a break for a period. I rather stress myself for a few months and take a short break, then have a nine to five job. If I wasn't going to go to Toronto this year, I think I would just book a hotel room in downtown Vancouver for a few days to escape.

Who's better at pampering you than yourself? You know what you love and what you enjoy. I sat at a food court today sipping my cherry mocha and it was the best fifteen minute I've had by myself in the past few weeks. It was nice.

I've never noticed how much of a bond I've developed with my coworkers. We are a staff of over 50 people, but with a handful of them, I can have a great time. It must mean much if I can spent four nights in a row with them--that's work and going out. But then again, I spent two intense weeks with some of them during the Olympics. I feel lucky that I have them in my life.

I'm happy that I found someone that loves me as much as I love them. It's rare to find a friend like that. She's not here to replace anyone (for those who read my blog). The old could never be replaced by the new. She has a special place in my heart and despite new friendships arising, she will never be forgotten. But anyway, this lovely lady is pretty much my twin. It's scary because I've said in the past that I would hate someone if they were exactly like me. However, we have enough differences that we can be amazing friends. Then again, this friendship is relatively new, so I can't say much. Maybe talk to me in another four years.

Then there's another. He's pretty awesome. Although, sometimes he spills his guts when he's under the influence. Whatever the case, we can confide in each other. It's odd to be comfortable and trusting with someone so quickly. And before any assumptions are made, no, we are not interested in each other.

I think the guys find it odd that I can hang out with them (with no other girls around) comfortably. On top of that, I give them honest answers about girls. But hey, I suppose that's what I'm good at sometimes. Anyway, I like to think I can fit in with the guys at times... with the exception of their mundane conversation about hockey sticks. Honestly, they can get really in depth when talking about the flex, length, and materials. Zzz. I probably surprise them with some of the comments I make. My degree of censorship varies with the setting... muahahaha.

I'm enjoying my life. Most things are good. I try not to publicly announce the negatives in my life. The more I keep a happy face on, the more I genuinely feel happy (sometimes).

It's one in the morning. Maybe I'll sleep before 4 am for once. It'll be nice to get a decent amount of sleep... just maybe. Good night world.

I am going to crash soon. I don't know if I can go on like this until the end of April. 'sigh' Oh well, I enjoy it, but I feel like I am not absorbing enough material from school. Being a student is my full time job right now and I'm not doing it very well. I spend more hours at work than studying. Heck, I spend more time working on various volunteer projects than readings.

I planned to take a break during summer. The only thing I was going to do was Coop (37.5 hours/week). Then I decided that I will work at CTS. After that, I applied to be a board member of YWiB. So anyways, I had a really enjoyable night today. I think I found my new "escape" spot. It's only an hour away from home, but it's so nice. It reminds me of Victoria near the Empress Hotel looking out at the water. So peaceful and beautiful. Beautiful British Columbia is my home.

There's so much I want to do with my life. I've always been the person that jumps from one place to another. Yet at the same time, when I sit back and look into my life from the outside, I feel very lonely.

What I know and what I feel are such separate entities (I question my word choice, but hey, this isn't a formal paper). I know that I am making an impact in people's lives. I know that I am not just another person walking down the street. I know that I can and I will make a difference in the future. Yet at the same time, I feel like I can disappear and no one will notice. And if they do, I can be easily replaced.

Sometimes it seems like I'm just there. I suppose it's the consequence of always hurrying around. I don't spend hours upon hours developing friendships. But at the same time, I try to be there for people when they most need it. Selfishly, I feel like people don't have time for me. We all lead busy lives. I'm not going to compare who's busier because different people have different ideas on how they want to spend their time. Yet it hurts to see that I am rarely (if ever) called out to hang out, have a cup of coffee, or even have a study date. I understand I have a history of being busy (and still am), but that doesn't mean that I don't do other things.

It sounds like I am complaining now. I am not. I'm just typing my thoughts down. Sometimes it helps just letting it out. Although it's probably better to talk to someone rather than screaming it out to the world (not really, but blogging is very public and I have no idea who reads this).

I'm just procrastinating at this point. I need to step back and take a breather. My shift today got canceled. I'm happy and sad about it. I'm glad I have more time to do work. Yet at the same time, I need the money.

I don't need income in the sense that I cannot survive without it. Luckily, I am fortunate enough to have a financially stable family to provide the basic needs. Sure, I pay for tuition and so forth, but it's because I choose to, not because I need to.

I am excited for coop to start. It'll provide the opportunity that I was looking for, plus the income that I want. I was cleaning my room the other day and I realized that I have a lot of stuff. I've collected many treasures (in my eyes) throughout the years. Many things that I figured I should keep because it may be useful in the future. I think I'm going to clean it out. I want to overhaul my life.

There are closets full of stuff I don't use anymore. I have books and magazines. I have shelves full of craft supplies. I have boxes full of old learning materials. I have tubs of childhood toys. I have piles of clothes. I have bags of makeup. I want to clear it all up. Maybe I'll sell some stuff and donate the rest.

I don't want to part from them because they are my possessions. Yet at the end of the day, if I haven't touched them for months or even years... how important are they? Do I really need it?

That way of thinking has really curved my shopping styles. I love purchasing new items. But I know that if it's not something I need and if I don't deserve the little treat, I shouldn't bring it home--even if it's a good deal.

I don't plan to change my life. I have no need to do that, but I want to start on a clean slate. I think my cleaning out my stuff, it'll help me clear my thoughts as well. I need to get rid of all the baggage that's weighing me down!

That makes no sense... meh. By the way, if you're still reading, do you enjoy my change in subject? There's no way I can tie this post together into a coherent idea. Plus, I do that enough already for school. Also, there are many flaws with the thoughts I've typed up in this post. Don't you think I deserve to type mindlessly?

The awkward facing seats on the buses make interesting people watching sometimes.

There was a young white couple (obviously not well off [please note that I'm not discriminating people that aren't swimming in wealth. I'm simply stereotyping to paint a picture in your head]) sitting across from me. Like usual, I had my iPod on. They are very open with their affection towards each other and lead a very different lifestyle than I do.

The female started making typical asian faces (^-^Y) and then, realizing that I was asian (and non responsive to their conversation), she continues to make fun of the typical asian gestures. She then continues with other asian stereotypes such as making fun of asian males with small penises, and so forth. I suppose her goal was to annoy me. Instead, I felt guilty.

I know it's an odd feeling considering the situation, but I felt guilty because I started judging her. I felt bad for her because of her financial situation (judged by her clothing). I felt bad for her being in the social setting (she was talking about beating people up and being spat on, etc). And then I felt good about myself because I know that I will eventually have a financially stable, happy, and safe life.

Yeah, I'm not perfect either.

Oh well.

Teach WHAT in China?

So I just received a email from Co-op Advising for new international co-op opportunities. There was one that just made me literally "lol": "Teach Math in China".

Seriously?

"Students will teach grade 12 level math to students in China."

I don't know about you, but my understanding is that China's mathematics (in terms of academics) are much more advanced than Canada's. This was placed under the Science faulty too. I supposed any second year university student should have an advanced understanding of math. However, it's still a strange thought to want a Canadian university student teaching math in China.

More details...

Ever since I decided on my major, I have done a lot of thinking in regards to career paths I would want to pursue. I ended up with three; one of them being event planning. I have always enjoyed the logistics of events. Even in everyday life, I enjoy being kept busy going from one thing to another. So event planning fits perfectly for me. There are cons though to balance off the pros. If I do end up in event planning, it'll be difficult to keep a family (depending on the husband of course) due to the busy and irregular schedule. Also, it may involve a lot of traveling. Another is that the market in Vancouver for it is not very big. I would either have to settle with less income or relocate. But either way, I am excited for this co-op position because it'll help me in crossing it off my list or pushing it to the top.

By the way, check me out in July because I'll be event planning Canada Day in North Van. =)

Valentine's Day & Chinese New Year

I can go on and on about my thoughts on Valentines Day. However, I have a paper to write so my post will be condensed. Valentines day, in a nutshell, is a cute holiday that has been hegemonized by our consumerism society.

Anyway, despite this, I enjoyed a simple day with him. He picked me up early (my kind of early) in the morning to go out for breakfast. When I walked out to his car, he surprised me with handmade roses in a vase. I love presents that don't die. Plus, he actually surprised me. Yay! Then we head down to our usual breakfast place and enjoyed a yummy meal to start off our day. Prior to the hockey game, we made a detour to purchase some pastries for dessert tonight. After the game we had just enough time to grab decent seats to watch Valentine's Day (the movie). Yes, it's corny to watch Valentine's Day on February 14th, but I like corny. He dropped me home after the movie for my Chinese New Year dinner with my family. We enjoyed a delicious hot pot dinner while watching the Olympics. Okay, it's not good to watch television while eating dinner with the family. However, we didn't let the television distract us from carrying on conversations! Watching Canada receive her first gold metal on home soil was amazing.

Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year, and Vancouver 2010 Olympics happening at the same time? Sure, that's great, but spending time with my family and him? Now that's golden. I don't need a designated day to love the people in my life.

So this year, both side of the family decides to celebrate Chinese New Years early. Por-por on the 12th and Ma-ma on the 13th. Because of that, I took both days off work. Por-por asked me to take the day off too. Just a side note, I've been busy the last few big family dinners due to prior commitments (and their last minute planning).

I just came home today and mommy tells me that we're not having dinner on the 12th anymore because one of my cousins are busy. Thanks.

Olympics Opening Ceremony Rehearsal

Worked at the first rehearsal today. Although my shift was from 12pm to 9.30pm, the sore feet was worth it. I had a chance to watch some of it in the lower bowl and it was amazing. I can't wait to watch the whole thing (on tv) on Friday. It was honestly a once in a lifetime opportunity. When else would we have another Olympics and would I ever be able to afford the tickets (hopefully someday...)? It was breath-taking and I appreciated every second of it.

My job is uninspiring. My pay is minimal. My uniform is two sizes too big.

...but I am excited to be part of the Olympics.

You lecture me about talking on the phone late at night (please note that I talk very quietly). You repetitively remind me to keep my friends quiet when they're over past your bedtime. Is it so much to assume that you'll be considerate enough to keep your friends quiet when they're over?

Sure, I shouldn't be sleeping past 11am. But I am often out late (usually due to work) and I sleep late because I absorb material and focus better at night. Also, I'm trying to study. I don't think my parents comprehend the fact that in university, although I'm only in school for 3 to 4 hours per course, it doesn't mean I have a lot of leisure time. It's because I have piles after piles of readings. Sure, I'm online a lot. You know why? My readings are online. Plus, I'm saving money by searching for required readings online rather than buying the courseware.

I'm trying to do well in school so you can brag about it. I'm working as much as I can so I don't touch your money. I'm trying to be a good daughter. So please, can you just let me sleep?

I needed a new post. The last one was too -insert word- to look at.

I just had an interview today for a coordinator position. I realized that I really need to talk to people more. I can't talk without stumbling over words. Through Communications, I've developed decent writing skills, but verbal communications is something I still need to work on. Grr!

Two finals on the next two days. Prepared I am not. Therefore I shall continue my exploration in the world of art and popular culture, and quantitative research.

I know I can't complain because Stephen's schedule is always scarier but...

AHH! I'm not looking forward to the rest of November. Tonight, I need to finish the first half of a 45 (or so) pages project. Sadly, I only started it today. Horrible, I know. I only realized my schedule when I was talking to him and seeing when's the next time we have time to see each other. It doesn't look that bad on my calendar!

It's really just club stuff that's taking up most of my schedule. I'm not even that active in SMA either! I try to attend all the events, and I'm only planning the Charity Series. Oh well. Hopefully I'll lower my participation in SMA so I can start writing for The Peak (a student newspaper at SFU). Plus, I want to get on the organizing committee for the MS Society events that are coming up (MS Walk, MS Bike Tour, etc).

I need a social life too. I miss having one, but schedules conflict. Sadly, a lot of people I know don't maximize their time. I'm sorry, I had to point that out. I wish I went out more. I don't need to go out as much as he does, but I miss it. Although looking back, I never really had the social life I wanted to. I've always been bombarding myself with work, volunteer, and extra-curricular activities. (Hmm, maybe school should have been in the too.)

Since I mentioned school... I attempted to try harder in my courses this semester and it is evident in my results. I received an A and an A- on my midterms. *dances* I still have horrible study habits, but I notice that being attentive in class really helps. Yes, I realized that after 6 semesters in university. Fail. =P

I think at this point of my life, I need a good balance of school, community involvement, family, work, him, friends, and alone time (not in any particular order). Someone help me!

I must admit that my November schedule is more free than my October, but I think I'm starting to go crazy. I just want to sit in bed, watch Bones, and munch on Halloween candy. Speaking of Halloween... I ended up waking up early to go grab some cheap ones. I managed to get my hands on a box of Hershey's bars before they were all gone. It was only $3.99 for 50 bars! Yummy.

Marketers' Night is over too. That was a good experience. We spent 4 months planning it and it was all worth it in the end. There was minimal networking done on my part, although I did manage to give away some of my business cards. I personally don't enjoy the process of networking. I can see how fake some people can be, and I try to steer away from that. It's a challenge sometimes though--especially when you don't want to be rude. Practice makes perfect!

Now that Halloween is over, I can start getting into the Holiday spirit. It helps that I'm doing the Christmas Charity series for SMA. This time I have a committee under me! Horrah for more man power!

Marketers' Night

Lately, my thoughts have been consumed by thoughts of SFU SMA's 20th Annual Marketers' Night. Joyous. I'm not even the project manager! Although I must admit that I'm not as busy as some people I know, I cherish my alone time. Now I'm not regretting being involved in this signature event, I just miss quiet time.

In the past week or so, you'll probably find me hiding in a corner engrossed in a novel. I'm almost done my second one! That's amazing! I haven't done that since mid-high school. I suppose it's another way for me to escape. But before I seem like I'm complaining, I'm really not. Marketers' Night (now will be referred as MN), combined with midterms, coop prep, and weekly readings (a stack a week for one course) is just taking a toll on me. Well, it's not too bad, but I have pressure from myself to do really well this semester so it adds up.

Although looking back, I did more in high school than I am doing now. Let's compare. In grade 12, I was involved in four clubs, Trojan Market board of directors, curling (because I'm Canadian!), band... and I think that was it. Oh, I managed the Business work experience program too. Work-wise, I had two part-time jobs. Right now, all I have to worry about is school, SMA, MN, coop, and a seasonal part-time job.

So I got a new piercing... without letting my parents know. It's been 4 days no and my parents haven't noticed yet. Either that, or they don't care.

Here's the "uh oh" moment. Mom's very conservative friend is over right now. She's making me have lunch with them in the kitchen as we speak (or well, as I type). She'll FREAK if she sees it. (Yes, I've known her for that long. Come to think about it, I've know her since I was a toddler.)

Fall Line Up

So it's September again. You know what that means? New shows =)

Now typically, I don't follow television, but due to my schedule this semester, I think I finally television around it. There are a lot of good shows out there and I'm unsure which I'll follow but so far it looks like... How I Met Your Mother (Mondays at 8pm) and Glee (Wednesdays at 9pm).

Hopefully I'll be able to download Bones (Thursdays at 8), Lie to Me (Mondays 9pm), House (Mondays at 8pm), NCIS (Tuesdays at 8pm), and the Good Wife (Tuesdays at 10pm).

I saw the pilot of NCIS Los Angeles. LL Cool J is in it. Yes, the rapper or whatever he goes by. I do give him credit for having quite a bit of acting gigs and he's doesn't seem like a musician pretending to be an actor (I'm not going to name names here). I'm not going to go in depth into what I think about it or a review... just yet. Let's just say, I thought it was stupid that LL Cool J's character ran after a speeding car--by foot.

...and yes, this post is half-assed. Watching The Good Wife right now.

I try to be nice... I know most people would just close the door on them. What do you people think? Am I decently nice or just plain evil? Sadly after cold calling for Marketers' Night and being hung up on (ugh), I still don't have much pity on telemarketers and kind. At least the people I'm calling are industry professionals =)

Just Stop and Smile

Mommy said something interesting today. It wasn't deep and insightful, but she brought up a good point.

Him and I were watching TV today and we saw the new Tim Horton's advertisement for their blueberry blossom doughnut. I started nudging him because I wanted one. (Okay, I'm usually not like that but... the advertisement made me want to have pieces of doughnut melt in my mouth. I digress.) He gave in and decides to drive us there for some sweets before his game.

As we're enjoying our doughnuts he said, "I don't need to buy you anything when food makes you so happy." I laughed because my mommy says the exact same thing about herself.

I went home and told Mommy this. She replies by saying that we're like that because we appreciate the little things in life. That's true. I don't take for granted that he would do something just to see me smile. Heck, I don't even take for granted that he pays that couple dollars for doughnuts or when he opens doors for me. Although I've only mentioned what he does, it doesn't mean I don't notice it when other people do it too and of course, I try to reciprocate whenever possible. So I guess I realized that noticing the small things and everything makes me and people around me just that much happier with life.

Food Adventure #2

Since I picked where to eat last, he decided to be adventurous too and picked a random restaurant. We ended up at Romana in North Burnaby.

It's supposed to be Italian/Greek however we didn't try any of their Greek dishes. We ended up having their ribs & spaghetti and pizza. The ribs were a huge disappointment. It was too dry. The pizza was decent. The toppings were as expected with oozing cheese. It was over baked though because the crust was hard and overly crispy.

It was busy though (for a Thursday night). Although the food was disappointing, the service was good except for the end. The lady (most likely the owner or the owner's wife) was really nice but when we asked her to pack up the pizza, she made it really awkward for us by insisting that we should get the ribs packed too. We really didn't want to take it home because well, there was one rib left and enough pasta to feed a baby. She brought the pizza to the back to pack up but she came back with a small container and packed the rib dish in front of us. =/ We felt obliged to take it home, but it ultimately ended up in the trash.

Food Adventure #1

So honestly, ever since I've stumbled upon Kevin's food blog, I've been following some foodie's adventures. This is a plus especially when the BF and I are starting to get bored with our meals. Everyone needs an adventure once in awhile!

blah blah blah. <-because I suck at transitions Last weekend the BF and I decided to hit up some random places in *gasp* Richmond! It was honestly, our first time in Richmond together. Okay, no, it was the second time. But I don't think the first time really counted because he only went there to rescue me from Netholics (x_x*).

First destination... Tenku Bakudanyaki. We both ordered the original (pictured above). He wanted the pizza but they were sold out. (I think that's pretty bad planning on their part because the only difference is that they use tomato sauce and their menu only consists of six items and a special). It was interesting. They're like giant takoyaki balls stuffed with lots of goodies and made from mochi instead of flour. But the idea is pretty much the same. I do prefer bakudanyaki over takoyaki. However, I didn't like the mass amount of cabbage (ick). I was going to complain about the price (500cents), but then again, you pay just that much or even more for takoyaki (and that stuff is just flour stuffed with a small piece of squid).

Next we went to Danny's Market to try their Screamers. Screamers is a slurpee with soft-serve ice cream. I got the Cream Soda while he tried the Orange Crush. It's an interesting drink and I would go back again (if only it wasn't so far). Yummy.

LC: Fassil

So for May's LC dinner, we decided to be adventurous. The suggestions brought up were Caribbean, Indian, Ethiopian, and Afghan. Since we are a very democratic group, a poll was set up and Ethiopian won. The location of choice was Fassil.

I must say, I had doubts about my willingness to try new things. I mean, I'm usually up for anything and (I like to think that) I have an open mind, but Ethiopian food is so new to me that I had... what's that word? Meh. Anyway, I had fun. It was different and I enjoyed the meal. The staff was really friendly. (Although I don't know if it's because the owner's son knows a couple people in out group.) Mind you, our group was huge. Our group this time had 14 people and we took up half the restaurant. They did accommodate us well though.

So the food itself, I can't say what exactly it was. I wish I took a picture of it though. I am in no way claiming to be a food critic or even a food blogger. I'm just recalling my experience.

So lately I've been obsessed with dinosaurs. Okay, not really, but it's a long story. Anyway, the SMA Fundraiser Car Wash was today, and Ellick and myself went for a McDonald's run. I wasn't really hungry so I went for a Happy Meal. One of the reasons I was leaning towards that was because I wanted a dinosaur toy!

Yups, Ice Age! Initially I got Sid, but then on my way home, I dropped by another McD and asked if I could trade for Rudy. (But honestly, I think Momma Dino is so much more awesomer.) I was so happy when the lady said I could. That made my day. (I think my maturity level just went down 6 notches.)

In Fall 2009, they're opening one in my city. *dances* Okay, it's not at the prime shopping locations (downtown or the currently high schoolers infested mall ) but it'll be easily accessible once the new skytrain line opens up.

So I was craving chocolate cake. Dense and rich chocolate cake with a scoop of ice cream and hot fudge to be exact. (No, it wasn't my time of the month.) He picks me up to fulfill my long, awaited cravings. =) It took us an hour to find Homestyle Two-Bite Brownies but I felt like a little girl that finally got the doll from the store window. We ended up at his place with a bowl of warmed brownies and a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream; and we enjoyed the dessert with He's Just Not That Into You on the tele.

Was what he did over the top? No. Okay, maybe with the exception of having the patience and determination to hunt for my two-bite goodness. But it was just so sweet =) Yeah, that's right, I'm showing him off. (At least I'm being honest about it... unlike those people that post up a million pictures of everything they do.)

Spoiled much? Nope, just loved =)

Okay, I'm sure there's sun outside right now, but it's a tad gloomy inside the house. It's a Saturday and no one is home. I should be studying right now, but what am I doing? I'm organizing my iTunes library, planning a fundraiser car wash, and organizing my schedule. What am I going to do after that? I need to organize my notes so I can study for Thursday's midterm. That's basically my day: organizing stuff.

Thanks to Garbo, I discovered GoogleForm under GoogleDocs. GoogleForm is where you can set up surveys and polls and such. It provides templates for quick professional or fun looks to customize your page. Plus, you can view the results in charts and spreadsheets. I love it! I'm falling more and more in love with Google. Is that possible?

And no, I'm not going to bother censoring or initializing names on my blog. I'm not mentioning people in a negative way. Plus, they're anonymous to people that don't know them since I'm not throwing last names out there. I've noticed that since I've moved from Xanga to Blogger, I've changed my blogging habits. I find it much more convenient because I take advantage of Google's Blog Reader. I love the automatic feed. Plus, I had it on my iGoogle so it's ~~laziness~~ convenience taken to another level. I can talk about my love for iGoogle at this time of my life, but I believe that'll be another post altogether. Anyway, my behaviours have changes in the form of blogging. I realized that I've turned into a more audience blogger in terms of my interaction in the blogging world. I read and comment on blogs expotentially more than I write. Now this brings up another point: so what? My known regular adience base back when I was on Xanga was 3 people. Now, from what I know from my comments, my audience base is much bigger. However, I don't believe that's due to my switch to Blogger. I've noticed that a lot of people that I know are joining the blogging world.

Great. University is making me analyze everything. This could be a good thing because it gets me to understand how I am and where I'm coming from. (Breaking out of that "I don't know my identity" position is nice. So that's why high schoolers and cliques have such a strong relationship.) You're probably wondering how understand how I blog is relevant to me. Well, who knows right? =) It's better to explore something rather than not. Excess information ftw. (dork!)

This blog is getting all over the place and my writing is horrible (like usual but I'm going to throw in an excuse). Please forgive me. I'm typing this while my prof is leading a debate in class: is the cost of slave labour more expensive than wage labours?

Free Tumbler!

About 5 days ago, I received a email from Starbucks with a huge heading: Starbucks™ Shared Planet™+ Zipcar™ Parties in Toronto and Vancouver. I looked at the address, and the one in Vancouver is just located downtown. The purpose of the event is for Starbucks Shared Planet and Zipcar to "share a commitment to doing business in ways that are good to the earth and to each other". During the event, they provided a "complimentary Pike Place Roast, information about Starbucks Shared Planet, delicious Starbucks pastries and an exclusive offer from Zipcar". Yes, I'm being lazy and just quoting everything. The thing that got me to check it out was the free Starbucks Tumbler.

The event was supposed to start at 7pm. Manda, Van, and I arrived before then and they were already giving out stuff. Luckily we were at the head of the line when they were at their last box of free tumblers. Booyeah! There were two designs, but we didn't have a choice. Do I really care? Nope. According to one of the Starbucks worker there, they spent the day washing every single one of the tumblers so we could use it right away. Wow!

In the end... you read all that just so I can say... Pattie gots a free tumbler and you didn't! =P

Afternoon Royal Tea at The Empress

So from a previous post, I mentioned that I finally had the chance to enjoy afternoon tea with my ladies.

Our Victoria trip was planned in rush and we made reservations only a few days prior to heading off to Victoria. The Empress suggests making reservations a week or two in advance. Luckily, they were able to accommodate us in such late notice. When we arrived, it was about an hour after they opened for seating and the Tea Lobby was already full. The location is beautiful. (I could live in the washroom!)

For the tea, we enjoyed the Empress Blend. I absolutely loved the blend. Before leaving, our server gave us our complementary sample of the tea to take home. It's packaged in a really nice tin box and there's 10 tea bags in each! Here's a description of it straight from their website.

"The Empress blend is a selection of seasonal, quality teas, created exclusively for The Fairmont Empress by the Metropolitan Tea Company. With components from Assam (thick malty and full bodied), Kenya (floral-like flavor and a golden coppery infusion), South India (superb fruity and sprightly flavor), Ceylon (airy, almost piquant flavor), and China (burgundy depth with light oaky notes), it is truly one of the finest blends in the world."

We also elected for the food option ($12 more per person). The food we sampled were pretty much the same as the sample menu provided on the website. The scone was delicious and each one came with an individual sealed jar of jam. (So cute!) I really enjoyed the pastries--especially the Battenburg (vanilla and chocolate sponge checkerboard wrapped in marzipan) and shortbread. *drools* A few of us had trouble finishing our portions. I was only able to sample part of some of my sandwiches and pastries.

In the end, was the experience worth the $70 (including gratuity)? You be the judge of that.

Victoria Trip with my Ladies

So this past weekend, the six of us headed to downtown Victoria for our first trip together. We explored many places, but I think I might separate the main events to different blogs. Sound good?

Overall, the trip was relaxing. There were certain things we did that some enjoyed more than others, but that's just expected. It's no fun if all of us like the same things.

We visited many locations yet not enough at the same time. There's just so many places that we've yet explored! I can't wait to go back and hit up all those locations. (Anyone want to go to the Royal British Columbia Museum with me?) We visited Miniature World, Rogers' Chocolate Soda Shoppe, and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, just to name a few.

There's no good looking white guys there... what is up with that!?! (Bring one back for me, Nelson!)

Hawker's Delight

So I went on another food adventure with my dear, lovely, high school buddy, AY. This time it was one that neither of us had tried before. So the location of choice? A "hole in the wall" location, serving Singaporean and Malaysian dishes, called Hawker's Delight (4127 Main St.).

I got the chicken curry with rice while she tried the Mee Soto (yellow noodles with chicken and fish cake). The great thing about the place is that the dishes all have an explanation of what it is under it to compliment the pictures. It has the neighbourhood restaurant feeling to it. Although due to its size, it's not somewhere you'll bring a big group.

Now would I ever go there again? Maybe. It's not overly far and the food is good enough. Plus, it's inexpensive (my meal with drink was only $6 and change!) and really quick.

Haircut

So I had the Disney marathon part two today with my dear "ex-bro" and 99 cents (SC and JW respectively). It was fun although I did fall asleep partway through Peter Pan. We watched the Jungle Book and the Little Mermaid before that. But that's not the point in this (hopefully) short blog.

How are you people spending Earth Day?

Earth Day tips:
(borrowed from Earth Day Canada)

1. buy what you need, not want
So in our case, borrow or buy those used books if you can. Plus, you'll save money in the process.

2. transportation alternatives
Take advantage of the sun and walk/run/bike! It's still spring yet we're surrounded by the wonderfully warm sun. Horrah! If not, use that Upass of yours. Yes, the new one is a horrendous brown, but at least it's better than the yellow that emphasizes our "Asian-ness".

3. food alternatives
Try to purchase organic and local products. Plus, it's a healthier lifestyle change.

4. ditch that dryer!
Hang dry your clothes. They feel better when they're dried by the sun anyway. Oh, and ditch that dish dryer too. It kills your electricity bill.

5. be water smart
Like number 4, the less water use the better. So take showers instead of baths. Take shorter showers. Turn your water off when lathering your hair up. Turn the tap off when you're brushing your teeth. (You don't need it running!)

6. recycle!
How hard is it to throw your newspaper into the recycling bin instead of the garbage? (Especially at a skytrain station... you need to OPEN the garbage can whereas the recycling bin is wide open.)

Sun Run and Sun

After reading HT's blog, I realized that I haven't blogged for a while. It's been 10 days! This is coming from someone that used to blog almost every day. It's not that I haven't been able to go online, it's just that I've been keeping myself with other activities. I'm starting to paint again and I'm really enjoying it. I'm working on two pieces at the moment. Although trying to paint with my half-dried paints is no fun. Oh well...

So anyway, The Sun Run was the past Sunday. I think I did decently considering that I haven't really been exercising since Grade 10. I'm proud of myself for not stopping at all. Whoots to determination and adrenaline rush!

I'm almost done my Green Tea Kit Kat bars =(

You would think that Green Tea flavoured Kit Kat bars are the easiest thing to find in Japan. Nopes. I couldn't find it until the very last minute. And when I say that, I mean I didn't find it until I was in the airport before leaving Japan. Obviously I stocked up on them. Now that my treasure chest of sweets is almost cleared out, I must once again start the hunt for my beloved Kit Kat bars. *drools* I've seen them at T&T Supermarkets before (at a ridiculous price). Please tell me if you see them anywhere!

On a happier note, I really enjoyed my day yesterday. My contacts came in time for me to watch Monsters vs Aliens in 3D. Remember the good ol' days when 3D glasses were made out of cardboard, and red and blue "lenses"? It's one of those things we'll be telling our kids about.

I love B.O.B. His relationship with Jello is memorable. Although he doesn't have a brain, he's really smart! (Kind of like me? Okay no, I have a brain but not smart at all. bleck)

Anyhoo, after doing some shopping with a couple of my ladies (KC and AY), I went home to get ready for my date with AL. We changed plans and ended up going to Joeys. It was my first time there, but I really enjoyed the atmosphere. I have to go back there during a game night though =)

We wanted to get some dessert after a couple drinks, but didn't know where to go. So I called up a friend and we went to Cheesecake Etc... a few blocks down from where we were. Aikes. I didn't know it was that close! Not wanting to end the night so early, we rushed our way to Riverport and watched Observe and Report. We made it just as the previews started for the last showing of the evening. It was a decent movie. We were sitting way too close for comfort though (second row in the very front section).

All in all, yesterday was a nice break prior to pulling the books out again for my last final.

Movie Day with ex-Bro

So since I haven't hung out with my ex-bro for the longest time, we've finally set up a day to hang out in the mist of finals season. (The "ex-bro" is another story.) Anyhoo, we set up for a Disney movie marathon. I honestly went insane watching the movies--especially the first one.

We watched Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmations, and Meet the Robinsons. I've watched Meet the Robinsons before, but it was fun to watch it again. I really enjoyed 101 Dalmations despite Cruella De Vil's evilness. Sleeping Beauty drove me off the wall though. I just couldn't tolerate how "air headed" it is. I don't know the right words to describe it. Meh. Sadly, this is coming from someone who loves unrealistic stories and plots. Aikes! Over all, it was a nice afternoon =)

So... I finally fixed part of the layout. It's not completely done but I'm working on it. Please be patient. Also, is there anything that you don't see that you want on my blog?

Oh right, I'll throw out a "Intro to Blogger" once finals are over. It'll make the transition to Blogger easier for you people. There's some nifty tricks out there that isn't hard, but can be confusing if no one taught you or you didn't bother to figure out yourself.

On another note, I made breakfast today. Yeah, I'm proud of myself for not just grabbing a rice cake. I had pancakes, cheese omelette, and apple juice. Yummy =) I would take pictures but my food rarely looks good. Yeah, I'll make a horrible housewife. So here's a picture of a bento box that I will never be able to make.

Someday I'll be one of those cool moms that would make lunches that other kids at school would be jealous of. Booyeah!
